From San Siro to Stamford Bridge via Paris – Thiago Silva´s journey to Champions League´s Centurion

For a player boasting 28 trophies in European football, including league titles in France and Italy, as well as Champions League success with Chelsea, it s somewhat surprising Thiago Silva s big breakthrough on the continent did not arrive until he was 25.

After failing to make the grade at Porto, and contemplating walking away from the game entirely during a spell on loan with Dynamo Moscow, a successful return to Brazil with Fluminense ultimately led to a move to Milan and the rest, as they say, is history.

San Siro proved more than just a springboard into a trophy-laden spell in European football for Silva, and it is the ground where he is expected to make his 100th Champions League appearance on Tuesday with Chelsea, the eighth – and possibly final – club of his …

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Real Madrid: Rudiger´s last-gasp equaliser denies famous win

Antonio Rudiger s last-minute header shattered Shakhtar Donetsk hearts in Warsaw, with a 1-1 draw securing Real Madrid s spot in the Champions League knockout stages.

Oleksandr Zubkov opened the scoring a minute into the second half to put the Ukrainian side in sight of a sensational result on Tuesday, with the hosts close to doubling their lead when Lassina Traore clipped the crossbar.

Carlo Ancelotti s side, needing a point to secure safe passage to the round of 16, went for broke in the closing stages by moving Antonio Rudiger into a forward role.

That provided the breakthrough in the closing seconds, the German defender heading past Anatoliy Trubin to deny what would have been a famous victory.

A passive first half saw limited opportunities, Karim Ben…

France´s appeal over disallowed Griezmann goal dismissed by FIFA

France s appeal against the decision to disallow Antoine Griezmann s goal in last week s shock 1-0 World Cup loss to Tunisia has been dismissed by FIFA.

Griezmann thought he had cancelled out Wahbi Khazri s strike when he volleyed home in the eighth minute of stoppage time at Education City Stadium.

However, after the celebrations had died down and the whistle had sounded for full-time, referee Michael Conger ruled out Griezmann s goal for an offside infringement.

The Atletico Madrid forward was adjudged to have been offside when firing in from Aurelien Tchouameni s pass, which was helped into his path by a Tunisia defender.

But the French Football Federation (FFF) felt the officials were wrong to disallow the goal as play had briefly restarted when VAR i…

Eidevall targeting ´full-throttle´ approach against Bayern in the Champions League

Jonas Eidevall says Arsenal are going to take a full throttle approach as they look to begin the Champions League on a high against Bayern Munich.

The Swede is relishing the test ahead of them on Wednesday and plans to push his team just as hard in the Champions League as he does …

Szczesny refuses to quit smoking after joining Barcelona

Experienced goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has said that he will not quit smoking despite having gone back on his decision to retire from football to join Barcelona.

With Marc-Andre ter Stegen having suffered a serious knee injury last month, which will keep him out for a long period of time, Szczesny was persuaded to get back into football having left Juventus in August.

But the goalkeeper is of the opinion that what he does off the pitch in his personal life should be of no interest to anyone.

There are things that I don t change in my personal life, said Szczesny in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.

It s nobody s business if I smoke. I believe it doesn t affect what I do on the pitch, I work twice as hard.

Happy Wednesday with Wojciech Szczę…

Arsenal sign World Cup winner Caldentey from Barcelona

Arsenal have signed Barcelona s World Cup-winning forward Mariona Caldentey on a free transfer, following the departure of Vivianne Miedema.

The Gunners have been looking to strengthen their attacking options since announcing Miedema – the all-time leading scorer in the Women s Super League – would leave at the end of her contract.

They have now swooped for Caldentey after she called time on her 10-year stint with Barcelona, for whom she made 302 appearances and scored 114 goals.

She scored 58 of those goals in the Spanish top flight, a tally only bettered by Asisat Oshoala (92), Alexia Putellas (80) and Jenni Hermoso (70) for Barcelona.

I think what Arsenal are doing as a club is amazing – on and off the pitch, Caldentay, who helped Spain beat En…
